The high level meeting, which opened on Wednesday (March 2) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston, and lasts until Friday (March 4), has been convened by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), in collaboration with the Inter-American Drug Abuse Commission (CICAD) of the Organisation of American States (OAS) Multi-national Security Secretariat. Both groups have partnered with the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA) to host the meeting, which is designed to share findings on the existence of, and the extent to which the drug phenomenon is addressed in the curricula and activities of Caribbean universities. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Maureen Irons-Morgan, alluded to a project entitled: ‘CICAD/University Partnership Project’, which CICAD commenced implementing in collaboration with Latin American universities since 1997, which focuses on education, outreach and research, among other activities, as regard drug demand reduction and substance abuse control. She said the CICAD/CARICOM regional meeting with Caribbean universities has been organised with the objective of developing a similar project in the region. Expounding on the three key focus areas, Dr. Irons-Morgan said the educational component is expected to entail incorporation of relevant information about drugs in the undergraduate and post-graduate curricula of different academic areas, faculty development and monitoring evaluation systems. The outreach component, she said, will involve development of health promotion and drug abuse prevention activities at the community level, while the “very important” research component will facilitate the implementation of studies on drug related issues, according to the priority of each participating country. “The Ministry of Health recognises the importance of integrating these issues related to substance prevention into the academic development of our university students. It is, in fact, these students who will become our leaders, movers, policy makers and practitioners at different levels all across the Caribbean. The Ministry wholeheartedly welcomes and supports this initiative of CICAD, the University of West Indies, other universities, and the NCDA, and pledge to give the necessary support to facilitate this process,” she assured. Programme Manager for CARICOM’s Sustainable Development Secretariat, Beverly Reynolds, who also spoke, said that the need to build specialised capacity in the area of drug demand reduction, was recognised from as far back as 2002 when the regional drug demand reduction strategy was developed. The strategy, she said, was presented to the regional Health Ministers at the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSAD). “We are pleased to be associated with this move, which has been spearheaded by CICAD. Over the next three days it will be intense. But I believe it is going to be rewarding,” Ms. Reynolds said. Hundreds stung by jellyfish over Memorial Day weekend

first_imgBy ESTEVAN MEDRANOPort Isabel-South Padre [email protected] 475 people were strung by jellyfish and Portuguese man o’wars — also called bluebottles — over Memorial Day weekend, officials said. The number represents a staggering increase from about 275 stings reported the previous week. Many of the stings were treated by the Cameron County Beach Patrol. An ocean current is blamed for the increase in stings which drew the jellyfish towards the shore. The stings, while painful, are rarely life-threatening. Officials offered a bit of advice if a swimmer is able to identify the transparent culprit. Applying heat is recommended for man o’ war stings while rinsing with saltwater or applying a paste made of baking soda and vinegar is recommended for jellyfish stings. When by the water, watch out for blue and purple flags planted by the Beach Patrol to warn swimmers about the jellyfish in the area.Want the whole story? Narine, Russell dazzle as KKR rebound

first_imgINDORE, India, CMC – Sunil Narine blasted his sixth Twenty20 half-century and Andre Russell Russell grabbed three wickets, as Kolkata Knight Riders rebounded from two consecutive defeats to beat Chris Gayle’s Kings XI Punjab by 31 runs in the Indian Premier League here today. Asked to bat first at Holkar Cricket Stadium, the visitors piled up a tournament-high 245 for six off their 20 overs, with the left-handed Narine carving out a typically audacious 75 from 36 deliveries.Captain Dinesh Karthik supported with exactly 50, while Russell lashed a swift 31 and Australian Chris Lynn, 27.Australian fast bowler Andrew Tye was the best bowler with four for 41. In reply, opener Lokesh Rahul smashed 66 and lower order batsman Ravi Ashwin, 45, but West Indies superstar Chris Gayle managed only 12 as Kings XI rallied before ending on 214 for eight off their allotted overs.Sunil NarinePaceman Russell led the attack for KKR with three for 41, as they moved into fourth spot on 12 points, to further intensify the race for a playoff spot.Despite the loss, Kings XI remained third also on 12 points. It was Narine’s fireworks which made the difference as the makeshift opener slammed nine fours and four sixes in an imperious innings.Dropped on seven in the third over by Afghanistan off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman off a return catch, Narine made the most of the reprieve to race to his half-century off 26 deliveries. His first seven balls yielded just seven runs but he accelerated quickly, striking hefty blows off Mujeeb and then left-arm seamer Barinder Sran. Narine put on 53 for the first wicket with Lynn and dominated a 75-run, second wicket stand with Robin Uthappa (24) before finally perishing in the 13th over, feathering a pull at Tye to be caught at the wicket. When Uthappa fell two balls later with one run added to leave KKR on 129 for three, the right-handed Russell arrived to belt two fours and three sixes in a 14-ball cameo, helping to inspire a frenetic-paced 76-run, fourth wicket stand with Karthik.Barbadian fast bowler Javon Searles got in on the act on his IPL debut, carting the final delivery of the innings – the first ball he faced – for six over wide long on. Gayle then struggled to get going, punching two fours and a six in a 17-ball stay at the crease as he added 57 off 34 deliveries with Rahul, who counted two fours and seven sixes in a 29-ball knock.Fellow Jamaican Russell accounted for Gayle in the sixth over, getting the left-hander to edge a pull through to the keeper, and his dismissal saw Kings XI slide to 119 for five in the 12th over as the Caribbean trio of Narine, Searles and Narine scythed through the middle order.last_img read more

A year later, Grenfell Tower fire victims remembered

first_imgSimon Dawson/Getty Images(LONDON) — Londoners who lost loved ones in the Grenfell Tower fire marked the anniversary at the remnants of the building Thursday with a moment of silence to remember the 72 victims who died. Many wiped away tears and carried white flowers in their hands. Some wore green as part of a campaign to show support for those whose lives were forever altered by the fire.Mahmoud Alkarad, a Syrian refugee who lived in the tower at the time of the fire, brought a photo of his close friend Mohammad Alhaj Ali, who died in the fire.“It’s been a year, and it went so quickly,” he told ABC News. “It’s emotional to be here and remember my friend and how we used to live.”Alkarad added that it’s been comforting to mourn with others who lost friends and family members in the blaze. Since the fire, he said he has gotten to know many of his former neighbors.“We are united now,” he said. “I used to know 10 people in the tower. Now I know 40.”The fire, which broke out last year in the overnight hours in North Kensington, burned for about 24 hours. It took hundreds of firefighters to get the 24-story structure under control. The deadly blaze in the public housing apartment complex sparked outrage and raised questions about inequality in one of the richest boroughs of London. Before the fire, residents had complained about lack of safety in the building and warned that a massive fire could happen.A public inquiry examining the circumstances leading up to the fire recently included feedback from experts, who determined that there were safety issues with doors, ventilators and elevators in the building and that external cladding helped the flames spread quickly. The fire started on the fourth floor, but it only took minutes for flames to engulf the building.London’s Metropolitan Police is carrying out a criminal investigation and considering manslaughter charges. On Thursday, a nationwide moment of silence was observed at noon local time. It lasted 72 seconds — one second for each victim. The tower was lit green at 12:54 a.m., the same time the fire was first reported one year ago.At the memorial, the names of the 72 people who died in the fire were read aloud, followed by the words “forever in our hearts.”London Mayor Sadiq Khan laid a wreath in front of the tower.British Prime Minister Theresa May tweeted a tribute to the victims of the fire and their loved ones.“Today, we remember those who lost their lives at Grenfell Tower and pay tribute to their family, friends and loved ones for the strength and dignity they have shown,” she tweeted.Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. Dolphins demolish Chiang Mai Tigers

first_imgThe score remained 2-0 until half-time but United wasted little time after the break to confirm their dominance as Korean defender Lee Won-young capitalized on a mistake by Siritongsopa to head the ball into an empty net and extend United’s lead. The stage was then set for the impressive Bubalo to complete his hat-trick, which he duly did with a deft 76th minute lob over the advancing Siritongsopa to make it 4-0 and ten minutes later he rounded the Chiang Mai keeper before slotting the ball into an open goal. The visitors’ miserable evening was compounded in the dying minutes of the match when they were awarded a penalty kick only for it to be brilliantly saved by United keeper Piyapatrakitti, thus maintaining the scoreline at 5-0 until the final whistle.Pattaya United’s next match is on Saturday, April 18 when Chiang Rai United come to town for a Toyota League Cup fixture.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.  The Dolphins will return to league action on April 22 with an away trip to Prachuap FC.In the Thai Premier League, Chonburi FC signed off for their Songkran break with a 2-2 home draw against Nakhon Ratchasime FC on April 5.  The Sharks are now 7 points off the pace in 11th place and will next face a trip to joint leaders Bangkok Glass on April 26. A hat-trick from Serbian forward Milan Bubalo helped Pattaya United to a resounding 5-0 victory over Chiang Mai FC at a rain-soaked Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya on Wednesday, April 8 and saw the Dolphins climb up to eighth place in the Thai Football League Division 1 standings.  In the club’s final league fixture before the Songkran holiday, United took the lead in the 10th minute when midfielder Wattana Plainum connected with a cross from Chaiyawat Buran to head the ball powerfully past Siritongsopa in the Chiang Mai goal.Pattaya United players congratulate Wattana Plainum (2nd left) after he opened the scoring against Chiang Mai FC in their Division 1 fixture at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya on April 8.The hosts doubled their lead in the 27th minute as Bubalo scored his first of the match with a low left foot drive from an acute angle into the bottom corner of the visitors’ goal.last_img read more
