Strasbourg – at any cost

first_imgHänsch tried to mollify her during a recent plenary session by saying that the problem would “probably” be resolved when the building was finished. Not only is construction workcontinuing on a new hemi-cycle a stone’s throw from the Council of Europe building at vast cost to the French public purse, but the taxpayers of France have now discovered that they forked out 265,432 ecu last year in fares for taxis and special buses to ferry MEPs and other dignitaries to and from airports and railway stations. Who runs up the biggest share of the bill? Euro MPs, in town for just one week in four, generated 222,200 ecu of the total, with the Council of Europe chalking up a much more modest 43,200 ecu. This may be a high price to pay for keeping the Union’s democratic heart beating in Strasbourg, as the newspaper Dernière Nouvelles d’Alsace pointed out, but at least there is plenty of room in the lifts.Socialist leader in the Parliament Pauline Green may be an advocate of a permanent move to Brussels, but that has not stopped her complaining that there are not enough lifts in the Espace Leopold building. Those that do exist are always “filled to capacity”, she grumbles.last_img read more

Dolphins demolish Chiang Mai Tigers

first_imgThe score remained 2-0 until half-time but United wasted little time after the break to confirm their dominance as Korean defender Lee Won-young capitalized on a mistake by Siritongsopa to head the ball into an empty net and extend United’s lead. The stage was then set for the impressive Bubalo to complete his hat-trick, which he duly did with a deft 76th minute lob over the advancing Siritongsopa to make it 4-0 and ten minutes later he rounded the Chiang Mai keeper before slotting the ball into an open goal. The visitors’ miserable evening was compounded in the dying minutes of the match when they were awarded a penalty kick only for it to be brilliantly saved by United keeper Piyapatrakitti, thus maintaining the scoreline at 5-0 until the final whistle.Pattaya United’s next match is on Saturday, April 18 when Chiang Rai United come to town for a Toyota League Cup fixture.  Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.  The Dolphins will return to league action on April 22 with an away trip to Prachuap FC.In the Thai Premier League, Chonburi FC signed off for their Songkran break with a 2-2 home draw against Nakhon Ratchasime FC on April 5.  The Sharks are now 7 points off the pace in 11th place and will next face a trip to joint leaders Bangkok Glass on April 26. A hat-trick from Serbian forward Milan Bubalo helped Pattaya United to a resounding 5-0 victory over Chiang Mai FC at a rain-soaked Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya on Wednesday, April 8 and saw the Dolphins climb up to eighth place in the Thai Football League Division 1 standings.  In the club’s final league fixture before the Songkran holiday, United took the lead in the 10th minute when midfielder Wattana Plainum connected with a cross from Chaiyawat Buran to head the ball powerfully past Siritongsopa in the Chiang Mai goal.Pattaya United players congratulate Wattana Plainum (2nd left) after he opened the scoring against Chiang Mai FC in their Division 1 fixture at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya on April 8.The hosts doubled their lead in the 27th minute as Bubalo scored his first of the match with a low left foot drive from an acute angle into the bottom corner of the visitors’ goal.last_img read more

Marsden back in marauding form

first_imgThe Billabong Bar Golf SocietyMonday, May 8, Phoenix Gold – StablefordWe had a change from our usual opening nine at Phoenix, teeing off on Lakes on this occasion.  The recent showers have ensured the fairways remain a rich shade of green but the putting areas are just a little different to those on the other nines, but smooth nonetheless.  The Ocean course followed, which many regard as their favourite nine holes.Thiery Petrement, Gerard Lambert and Brad Guest. It was a hard school today with only one golfer having less than 30 points and four others with 35 points but not good enough to feature on the podium.  Our own ‘Hercule Poirot’, Gerard Lambert, and Thiery Petrement have obviously felt the  need to support the French economy leading up to the general election in France for they have been taking the spoils with monotonous regularity in every way at the Billabong recently.  Thiery came out on top with a flawless 40 points and a ‘2’ and Gerard took third with 37 points while also claiming the only other ‘2’.It would have been a one/two for the French connection but for the efforts of Brad Guest, having his best ever round to finish second with 39 points (23 on the back-nine).Wednesday, May 10, Green Valley – StablefordWhat a strange country this is.  The weather was fine for the majority of the 18 holes, although very humid, but our last 2 groups were caught in monsoon like rain and came in looking like drowned rats.  As was to be expected, sympathy was in short supply from those in the earlier groups and faint smiles appeared on their faces.  By the time we were ready to leave, the roads around Green Valley were flooded but 2km towards the 36 the roads were dry – no rain at all. Weed killer has been applied to the big leafed grass on the fairways at Green Valley and large bare patches are now in evidence everywhere, so the wisdom of Capt. Bob prevailed and he elected to have ‘clean and place’, but only on the closely mown areas. The presentation was held in the comfortable surroundings of the Baan Tong Tong Resort run by a friend of the Billabong’s Michael Williams.  There were some amazing scores in both the men’s and ladies’ competitions, perhaps aided by having favorable lies on the fairway.  Miss Nu, returning after an enforced break from golf, scored 39 points but second place was taken by Miss Pin with 40.  Miss Yen blobbed the 10th but this did not stop her achieving a remarkable 44 points for first place.John Deardon, Bill Marsden and Thiery Petrement. The men were equally impressive, with John Deardon occupying fourth place with 36 points but the French connection came good yet again with Thiery Temine just missing out on second place with 39 points to another Thiery – Petrement – who devoured the front nine with 24 points but came down to earth on the back-nine with 16 and 40 overall.  We might find that many of the Billabong regulars will be taking a break from golf for 3 months for that is what Bill Marsden did and his first two games back were rewarded with 38 points and today 44 points, which equates to 64 net.Strangely, there were no 2s – that has to be a first at Green Valley!Friday, May 12, Burapha – StablefordA small field played Burapha A and B loops in perfect conditions, with a nice breeze and just some high cloud, although we did get a little precipitation after about 7 holes but not enough to worry this intrepid crew.  The course was in great condition as always and we only had one casualty as Capt. Bob had to pull out after hitting only 2 balls with a sprained wrist. The scoring was very good today with the French connection taking out first and second places, albeit on a count back between Thiery Petrement and Arch Armstrong, both on 39 points and Arch getting the bump into third.  The other French fellow took first with a fine 41 points.last_img read more

Study: Most of women’s college coaches are White and male

(AP Photo/Jessica Hill)ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ On the 45th anniversary of Title IX, women and people of color remain on the outside when it comes to hiring head coaches in women’s college sports, according to a report Friday by sports institutes. The report found that the coaches hired were predominantly White and male in most of the eight conferences surveyed: the Power 5 conferences _ Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern and Pac-12 _ along with the American Athletic, Big East and Ivy League. The study was done by the Institute for Diversity & Ethics in Sport in collaboration with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport and LGBT SportSafe.Title IX was signed into law June 23, 1972. It opened doors for girls and women by banning sex discrimination in all federally funded school programs, including sports.Seven of the eight conferences polled received a C or D grade for having female head coaches of women’s teams. The Big East, SEC and Big 12 fell below 40 percent. Only the Ivy League (55 percent) had more women than men as head coaches. The grades were far worse regarding race. Half the conferences (Big East, SEC, Big Ten, Ivy League) received a grade of F. The AAC was the lone league to have an above average grade of B, with 18 percent of its women’s coaches people of color.“I’ve never given an F as an overall grade in 25 years and there are four Fs in this particular report for lack of people of color of in head coaching positions for the women’s teams,” said Richard Lapchick, whose Diversity & Ethics group also puts out report cards on racial practices of the NFL, NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball, college football and college basketball. “That’s a damning statement that there could be four Fs in a single report like this.”According to the report, 27 of the 94 schools had no coaches of color leading their women’s sports. The SEC led all the leagues studied, with seven of its schools having all White coaches leading women’s teams.“It says people haven’t been paying attention,” Lapchick said, referring to the conference commissioners and athletic directors at the schools. When it came to gender, overall 57 percent of the coaches were male.“Title IX has dramatically changed the landscape of sport participation for girls and women but it in fact it has had the opposite effect on women in positions of power in women’s sport,” said Nicole LaVoi, co-director of the Tucker Center. “Title IX doesn’t really protect against that. There is nothing in the statute that says women have to coach women.”The Power 5 conferences were chosen because of their power and influence. The AAC is viewed by the authors as a league that could eventually join the power conferences. The Big East and Ivy League have female commissioners.Laphick and LaVoi urged conferences and their schools to become more inclusive and diverse in their hiring. This was the first time LGBT inclusion was examined in this report. As a result, the conferences were not graded in that regard.“All athletic directors need to undergo race and gender bias training because their beliefs and values influence their hiring practices,” LaVoi said. “It may not be intentionally but we all are biased.”last_img read more
