Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has no plans to renew contract talks with the union, a spokesman said. “At this point, we aren’t sure what purpose this all serves,” Matt Szabo said. “The members represented by EAA received their raises, which are retroactive to 2004. Their contract expires next June, and we hope to begin negotiations with them on that beginning this spring. We look forward to that process beginning.” Szabo said the mayor believes EAA workers, who are paid an average of more than $70,000 a year, are adequately compensated. Aquino has said he wants his members to receive the same contract given to Department of Water and Power workers. That deal included raises of 3 1/4 percent a year for five years and a clause that indexes the raises to the inflation rate. “We are in a posture that a strike could happen at any time,” Aquino said. “And we won’t be as courteous the next time we go out where we gave the city notice of our plans. It’s not something we want to see happen, but we will go out if we have to.” email@example.com (213) 978-0390160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Looking to strengthen its bargaining position with the city, a union that staged a two-day walkout this summer received support Tuesday for a possible future strike from the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “This is a major step for us,” said Bob Aquino, executive director of the Engineers and Architects Association. “What it says is that when we strike again, all the other unions in the city – from the longshoremen at the port to the Teamsters at the airports – will be walking out with us.” The support comes months after members of the EAA walked off the job to get higher raises as part of their city contract. The EAA represents some 10,000 employees in a variety of city agencies, mostly within the Bureau of Sanitation, accounting and the Los Angeles Police Department crime lab. But the union failed to gain concessions from the city. Aquino said his union never agreed to the city offer that amounts to 6 1/4 percent raises over three years, with no increase the first year. The City Council voted to impose the contract after negotiations reached an impasse. Tuesday’s support by the powerful federation gives the EAA authorization to strike to resolve the ongoing dispute with the city. “The labor movement strongly believes in the fundamental right of a worker to go on strike when absolutely necessary,” said Maria Elena-Durazo, executive secretary-treasurer of the labor group. Aquino said the support could broaden any future job action by the EAA, adding, “But that’s not something we want. We hope cooler heads will prevail and the city will work out a fair deal with us.”
17 April 2012The Cape Chamber of Commerce has urged the City of Cape Town to host African Cup of Nations matches next year, saying football is good for business, it was reported on Tuesday.Chamber chairman Michael Bagraim told the Cape Times it would benefit the city in the long run.“Soccer is good for the city,” Bagraim said. “It puts us on the map, brings tourists from Africa especially, and brings money into the coffers of even the smallest businesses.”The city missed the deadline for the signing of host city agreements last Friday, saying the costs were too high and uncertain as the estimated R27-million could balloon to R40-million.It suggested that the organisers pay 25 percent of the costs and the National Treasury guarantee 50 percent. The city and the Western Cape government would cover the remaining 25 percent.Mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing, Grant Pascoe, told the newspaper the city was still interested in hosting matches. The South African Football Association is due make announce its decision on the host cities for the continental football showpiece on Thursday.Sapa

Since the first Tweets were published on Twitter, magazine publishers have been looking for a way—any way—to monetize social media. Now, one new media company is giving it a shot.Glam Media has launched Tinker.com, a micro-blogging platform for users to find, follow, filter, create and share real-time conversations on events and news from online platforms like Twitter. Samir Arora, CEO of Glam Media, calls Tinker “the first safe micro-blogging solution for brands to advertise on curated event conversations.” Concurrently, the company is launching what it calls “the first professional micro-bloggers network.” Glam says Tinker will allows users to follow specific events, such as “professional micro-bloggers covering an Internet industry conference,” fans Tweeting as they watch an episode of Lost or “bloggers covering the NCAA’s March Madness.” Tinker will offer advertisers “safe” curation and filtration mechanisms to ensure brands will not be seen near potentially harmful posts. How the revenue sharing will work is not entirely clear. Tinker’s “Micro-Blogger Network” is currently building a micro-payments platform for members, acting as a content payment system for opt-in monetization, calculating posts and page views, and attributing a micro-revenue sharing. In February, the company launched a monetization model around real-time micro-blogging at New York Fashion Week and the Academy Awards.

Her creativity entails using various mediums including cloth, wool and iron mesh among others and the experimental quality of her work takes it beyond the plane of mere abstraction. She works on canvas, paper and board with equal energy to make balanced and tranquil compositions in variable textures and palette. In his style, one can see light and shade techniques at play, trying to create a surrealistic imagery. Sanjay’s main themes are about city life in general in which inanimate objects figure more prominently. Sanjay Bhattacharya has painted in oil, watercolour and acrylic and has done sketches too. Sanjay Bhattacharya, like most artists from Bengal is known more for watercolours and oil works. His initial paintings drew heavily on the style of Bikash Bhattacharya, but in later days Sanjay tried works in the style of other great artists of Bengal like Ganesh Pyne. In course of time Sanjay amalgamated various styles and developed on his own. With a display of urban life in a stylized manner, the works of Kalicharan Gupta’s imagery is complex and demands exploration. This exploration is both visual as well as architectural. There is of course color with subtle, tonal and compositional variations, moving towards making an impressive statement. Gupta’s works engage you both in contrast and harmony. Painted in a semi abstract style, his works invite you to view and weigh the impact of his unique style.WHEN : July 20- 25WHERE : Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre Lodhi RoadTIMINGS : 11 am till 7 pm

Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now Enroll Now for Free Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Steve Jobs this week gave small-business owners several reasons to consider either upgrading or converting to new Apple software.Apple is readying significant upgrades to its desktop Mac operating system and to the mobile software, known as iOS, that runs iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch devices. Many of the new features will be helpful to entrepreneurs trying to cut costs by having employees work remotely. The major product announcements made by Jobs and other Apple executives at the company’s annual developers conference in San Francisco were focused on software, rather than on the nifty new hardware devices unveiled at previous shows. June 7, 2011 The new version of Mac OS X, known as Lion, aims to remove the burden of saving, storing and retrieving all types of data – including text files, photographs, videos and presentations – from the shoulders of consumers by automating those functions into the software.Without having to worry about saving a file or closing an application, Mac users who have to temporarily leave their desk and shut down their computer can now resume working in whatever application they were last using, at the point they left off, simply by turning the computer back on.When combined with Apple’s new free service feature, called iCloud, those files automatically can be saved, stored and made available to all Apple devices linked on the same wireless network. The automated backup – among Lion’s 250 new features — will make it easier for remote workers using mobile devices to collaborate with co-workers back in the office. A related feature, called AirDrop, is a WiFi networking capability that will allow remote workers to set up wireless peer-to-peer networks and share documents in cafes, airports or wherever they’re working at the time. Those of you with long memories will recall that Apple’s previous attempt at a personalized content service, known as MobileMe, was not the company’s finest hour of user interface design.Jobs acknowledged as much during his keynote speech when he said he understood why some of the developers in the audience might ask, “Why should I believe them? They were the ones who brought us MobileMe.”But once the laughter died down, Jobs said the company had “thrown out” the existing versions of its calendar, email and contact/address applications and started over from scratch for the Lion OS X upgrade. The upgrade, which also includes a new “Mission Control” feature that makes it easier to manage multiple applications at once, will be available to existing Mac users for $29.99 beginning in July — but only through the company’s online Mac store, as Apple is phasing out using DVDs to distribute software. It will also come loaded on new Mac computer purchases beginning next month.Among the most useful features of the new mobile software, known as iOS 5 and due out in the fall, is improved camera software that makes it easier to alternate between taking pictures on an iPhone and using the device’s other applications. Notifications of incoming calls and messages are likewise less obtrusive to other apps.Jobs surprised everyone when he unveiled new mobile messaging software from Apple, at a time when most iPhone users have one from rivals such as Google or Research In Motion. And, in a swipe at Google’s Gmail service, Jobs noted that Apple’s email has “no ads.”But some of the biggest applause of the event came when Jobs explained that all Apple mobile devices and their content could now be updated and synced without the need of a desktop computer. They’re now “Mac- and PC-free,” Jobs proclaimed. This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. min read
