Study Predicts Growing Use Of Social Media In Healthcare

first_imgMen are more likely than women to turn to Facebook and other social networks for healthcare purposes, according to a survey by accounting firm PwC.Not surprisingly, the survey of 1,000 adults found that younger people were more likely to use social media than older people for healthcare purposes. Overall, nearly a third of respondents, and 50 percent of those under the age of 35, had used social media for healthcare purposes, which can range from registering a complaint to looking up informational videos on YouTube. The PwC report concluded that social media would continue to be a factor for healthcare providers and consumers, saying that healthcare is “no longer social media’s wallflower.” At the same time, however, ambiguous regulations, privacy concerns and a host of other factors all limit how patients and healthcare providers use social media to make decisions. But once these hurdles are overcome, the PwC report said, social media “will open new opportunities to improve health delivery and outcomes.”Facebook (18 percent) was the most popular site for people searching for healthcare information, followed by YouTube (12 percent) and blogs (nine percent). Duchess Of Cornwall And James Patterson Get Dads Reading

first_imgThe Duchess of Cornwall donned a hand puppet to keep a group of tiny tots amused as she joined best-selling author James Patterson to launch a campaign to get fathers reading to their children last week. The Duchess of Cornwall meets father and daughter Kabir Miah and Shakira Begum, four, during a visit to West Greenwich Library in London.Credit/Copyright: a storyteller read the classic tale Where The Wild Things Are to the youngsters in West Greenwich Library, The Duchess shook the puppet during the dramatic moments. The toy was a character from the story by Maurice Sendak about a little boy who travels to a magical land inhabited by fantastical creatures and becomes their king. With five grandchildren, Her Royal Highness has had plenty of practice at keeping little ones entertained. The Duchess also read the famous poem by AA Milne about changing the guard at Buckingham Palace. Before she started, she joked with her young audience and their parents, telling them: “It’s a poem my father used to read to me – that was about 100 years ago.”The Duchess and Patterson had travelled to Greenwich in south-east London to launch the Booktrust’s Get Dads Reading campaign. The Duchess is the organization’s patron, while the US thriller writer, who has sold more than 250 books worldwide, is a founding partner of a fund run by the Booktrust to get disadvantaged kids reading.Patterson, who was also joined by his wife Sue, stressed that it was the responsibility of parents to encourage their children to read and not that of their school. He said: “We are here to save lives, that’s my role, because if you cannot read your life will be severely disadvantaged.“This is not about reading Charles Dickens or Shakespeare but learning to read with confidence and if you can do that you can make your way through school, college and work.“If you cannot read you just look at school and think ‘This is hopeless’ and so you reject it. America is ahead in getting kids to read, the UK is behind America – something’s going wrong here.” read more

Best interest of the child needs to be redefined before passing Bill

first_imgAmber BernardAPTN NewsA child advocate who is testifying before Canada’s Senate says the best interest of the child must be kept in mind before Bill C-92, the proposed Indigenous child welfare law, is passed.Ardith Walkem of the Nlaka’Paumux Nation Tribal Council said on Thursday, that the meaning of the best interest of the child has historically resulted in situations like the Sixties Scoop.“In fact, we know, we know when we look at the kids who were the subject of the 60s, 70s, 80s, of that on-going scoop,” said Walkem.“We see what the impact has been for them. They’re the result of the operational best interest of the child.”Walkem wants to see the legislation re-define the best interest of the child to include cultural paramountcy.“It is in their best interest to remain connected to their Indigenous cultures, communities and territory. And give very clear direction that it’s to be interpreted and defined according to their own indigenous people’s values and traditions,” she said. She says if cultural considerations aren’t included in the definition that we will see former child welfare youth enter into the correctional system.“If we don’t acknowledge and keep children connected to their culture, the impact of the child welfare system isn’t protection. In fact, if we can’t keep kids protected, we’re going to see them later in the criminal justice system,” said Walkem.Bill C-92, the Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, Youth and Families, is currently being studied in Senate. The proposed legislation re-imagines control over Indigenous youth in the child welfare system.Indigenous children under the age of 14 make up 52 per cent of those in the system, while only making up seven per cent of all children under 14 in Canada. These children are predominantly under the jurisdiction of their respective provincial child welfare systems. That could change if C-92 receives royal assent and control is transitioned over to Indigenous communities. The act, now in senate, states the best interest of the child will be primary.Bill C-92 is currently in second reading in the House of Commons. The Senate must pass the bill before the summer break or it will not be passed into read more

Free Agent CJ Miles Leaning Toward Lakers

CJ Miles, a left-handed veteran  who can score in bunches at times, remains without a team. But not for long. The former Utah Jazz shooting guard has generated interest from many teams — including Utah, which would not like to see him depart. But the Salt Lake Tribune reported that Miles could decide in the next few days on the Los Angeles Lakers. The newspaper reported that Miles has met with representatives of the Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks. Still, playing backup to Kobe Bryant and competing being a part of a championship-caliber team could appeal to Miles more. Not good for Utah is that Miles is an unrestricted free agent, meaning that if he signs somewhere else, the Jazz would not receive anything in return.  The 6-foot-6, 222-pound Miles could make a decision this week. If he signs with the Lakers, the source said, it’ll likely be a one- or two-year deal via Los Angeles’ mini mid-level exception. Miles, 25, has already met with Dallas and Cleveland since free agency started July 1.It makes sense that the Lakers would covet the 25-year-old Miles. The Lakers are thin at shooting guard behind Bryant. They have second-year player Andrew Goudelock and Christain Evenga — no disrespect, but they do not elicit a lot of excitement.Miles is effective enough to give Bryant extended breathers, which would be beneficial to the Lakers come the playoffs. Also, Miles is an above-average, tough perimeter defender that could play some small forward in a pinch, too.The problem for the Lakers: Miles, who averaged 9.8 points on 38 per cent shooting last year, could be seeking more than what the Lakers can offer.  A mini mid-level is only about $3 million a year. And while Miles’ stock has dropped some over the past season, playing so-so on a bad team, he is young and and probably wants a longer deal. What the Lakers have going for them is that they are the Lakers. That lure could be irresistible for Miles. read more
